Presentation Details

In 2016, the Canadian Census confirmed that for the first time in history there are more British Columbians over 65 years old than there are those under 15 years old. This rapidly shifting demographic profile presents unique challenges to the healthcare system. In order to offset the resulting steady increase in healthcare costs, innovative strategies must be employed to maximise the health impact of, and minimize the burden on, existing facilities and infrastructure. Moreover, the covid-19 situation has made the needs of the senior population even more pressing and relevant than ever before.

Numerous government and research findings have indicated that harnessing innovative technologies within existing facilities is a potential solution. ‘Aging in Place’ enables and empowers older adults to age in the location of their choosing particularly their own home and is associated with a host of positive physical and psychological benefits, alongside reductions in healthcare spending.

Digital Health Circle (https://www.digitalhealthcircle.ca), is a non-profit organization specializing in seniors population needs and digital health technologies. Our work has identified and validated a new model of innovation to help the stakeholders of British Columbia to develop and empower the need of the diverse seniors population in BC through technology. During this presentation, we will reveal findings of our national survey, and explore how successful case studies exemplify our co-creation model.
